Gargi Rawat is a senior news anchor and environment reporter who has worked with NDTV 24X7 for the last two decades. For many years she has been a regular face on the channel and has filmed several documentaries and environment- related programmes.
She worked on the first-ever news show on wildlife in India, ‘Born Wild’ and anchored its Hindi version, ‘Safari India’, for the Hindi channel NDTV India. Gargi has also been editorial head for some of the best-known environmental campaigns carried out by NDTV, including ‘The Greenathon’, ‘Save Our Tigers’, and the ‘Banega Swachh India Campaign’. She has just released her first book Tiger Season, a work of fiction, which has themes of tiger conservation and environmental concerns. Sunaina Joshi is a reporter with a leading news channel. Unexpectedly, a fabulous opportunity falls into her lap when her channel is commissioned to run a campaign on tiger conservation featuring a Bollywood star, himself trying to resurrect his image and career following a drug scandal.
The shoot takes a dramatic turn when the television team finds itself in the middle of a local conflict and a heated incident involving a tiger attacking a forest guard. Controversy follows, with the decision to relocate the tiger to a zoo, leading to protests and fresh outrage over the action. To Sunaina’s dismay, she finds herself becoming the epicentre of the converging controversies.
Also complicating matters, are the run ins she has with the arrogant owner of the resort.
But is her aggravation with him turning to attraction?

Book Title: Wild and Wilful (HarperCollins, 2021)
A profound truth of the wild, and the world at large, is that we are a part of it, not owners of it. Animals live and love near us. Is there any animal we love and hate as much as the Royal Bengal Tiger? Tigers are feared and poached, but they also endure, becoming pin-ups for candlelight marches. Indian elephants are trapped by railway lines and fences, but are reclaiming their bodies and colonizing new areas in central India. And in our dirty cities, the sparkling Plain Tiger Butterfly flourishes as one of our last links to wildlife. Wild animals exist beyond our control. They are harmless, only occasionally dangerous. They live with us, or in spite of us. Those who know them understand that wild animals require acceptance for what they are, not enslavement for what we want them to be.
In this book, we meet fifteen iconic Indian species in need of conservation and heart. The author explores what these creatures need, and how they exert agency and decision-making. With an equal emphasis on human and animal, science and skilled prose, Wild and Wilful reveals the magic of the wild in our daily lives. It will take you from fear to wonder.
Wild and Wilful was shortlisted for several national and international prizes and was on a best nonfiction book list by The Hindu newspaper.

Book Title: Concubinage, Race and Law in Early Colonial Bengal.
Bequeathing Intimacy, Servicing the Empire
This book looks into the finer details, and everyday aspects of the domestic relations which British men came to establish with 'native' Indian women in early colonial Bengal. It does so by taking a unique look at the Wills and reading them as personal records of these men. These documents, where the men penned down details of their native mistresses, give a glimpse of what their lives, interpersonal relationships, household objects, and everyday affairs were like Interestingly, these native concubines only exist only in these Wills, and some court cases of the early modern India. The volume highlights how commonplace such non-marital cohabitation was and constructs the social history of these connections. At times, one catches the glimpse of the intimacies that were established through these connections.
It also speaks of the way the Europeans construct the notion of Indian women through ideas like seclusion, harem, elite women, Nautch women, saree, bathing at ghats, Ayah and governess and so on. It looks beyond a romanticized version of interracial household, by also speaking of issues of theft, violence, rape, bequeathment, and property rights which the women had to contend with, and also studies some of the early experiences of the mixed-race children who were a product of these relationships.
